If you thought the new 2012 movie about the end of the world was blown way out of proportion, wait until you see this.

Saturday Night Live recut the trailer for the apocalyptic schlock-fest during last weekend’s Joseph-Gordon Levitt episode featuring Sarah Palin as the new president in 2012 and well, just watch it and wait until you see who she picked as her running mate. That grumbling sound in the distance just might have been the apocalypse hungry for action.

And before all you Palin-ites getting your complaining fingers ready for typing, you should note that this parody video takes a much bigger swipe at the people who claim Palin and her ilk will bring about the end of the world as we know it. “My motto tonight,” Noory intoned at the beginning of the program, “is be prepared, not scared.” What followed was a graphic recitation of disaster scenarios for 2012, including hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions caused by solar storms, cracks forming in the earth’s magnetic field and mass extinctions brought on by nuclear winter. The only hopeful note of the night was struck when an unnamed caller asked Joseph what he thought about recent Virgin Mary apparitions in Bosnia.

“I love it,” the author answered. “That’s positive. You don’t need to be a devout Christian to admire the Virgin Mary. She’s a blessing to us all.”

When I reached Noory by phone at his program’s studio in California, he told me, “I’m a staunch believer that we are in an earth cycle.” As 2012 approaches, “Coast to Coast” has been devoting more and more programming to prophecies of doom and the signs and wonders that are thought to be harbingers of the coming end time: U.F.O. sightings, crop-circle formations, disappearing honeybees and flocks of migratory birds that fall from the sky. “There’s no question the planet is changing,” Noory said. “And the fact that the Mayans had an end date and their history talks of change, I find that fascinating.”

During an interview on WTOP radio in Washington, Dobbs fueled rumors he’s seeking a bid for public office, possibly the highest office in the land, when asked if speculation about an Oval Office bid is “crazy talk.”

“What’s so crazy about that?” Dobbs, 64, replied. “Golly!”

So, is it crazy talk or is it real, the radio station persisted.

“Well, I’ll tell you this much — it’s one of the discussions that we’re having,” he said. “For the first time, I’m actually listening to some people about politics.”

Fueled by a crop of books, Web sites with countdown clocks, and claims about ancient timekeepers, interest is growing in what some see as the dawn of a new era, and others as an expiration date for Earth: December 21, 2012.

The date marks the end of a 5,126-year cycle on the Long Count calendar developed by the Maya, the ancient civilization known for its advanced understanding of astronomy and for the great cities it left behind in Mexico and Central America.

A scholar who has studied the Maya for 35 years said there is nothing ominous about 2012, despite the hype surrounding claims to the contrary.

“I think that the popular books… about what the Maya say is going to happen are really fabricated on the basis of very little evidence,” said Anthony Aveni, a professor of astronomy, anthropology and Native American studies at Colgate University.

Aveni and Stuart are both writing their own books explaining the Mayan calendar and 2012, but Stuart said he’s pessimistic that people will be interested in the real story when so many other books are making sensational claims.

Dozens of titles about 2012 have been published and more are scheduled to go on sale in the coming months. Current offerings include “Apocalypse 2012″ in which author Lawrence Joseph outlines “terrible possibilities,” such as the potential for natural disaster.

But Joseph admits he doesn’t think the world is going to end.

“I do, however, believe that 2012 will prove to be… a very dramatic and probably transformative year,” Joseph said.

Growing interest

Another author said the doom and gloom approach is a great misunderstanding of 2012.

“The trendy doomsday people… should be treated for what they are: under-informed opportunists and alarmists who will move onto other things in 2013,” said John Major Jenkins, whose books include “Galactic Alignment” and who describes himself as a self-taught independent Maya scholar.

Chalk up another doomsday scenario for 2012: Rising interest rates.

We’re being a tad facetious, of course – if anything, keeping rates at current near-zero levels for another two years or more itself might be the apocalyptic scenario for some of the Federal Reserve’s more inflation-wary policymakers, such as Richmond Fed president Jeffrey Lacker.

But James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, said in a speech Wednesday that the pattern set after the last two recessions suggests the Fed is inclined to start raising rates two-and-a-half to three years after a downturn ends – which in the current case, likely happened sometime this summer.

By extension, that could mean interest rates will be on hold until 2012 – far longer than the market is currently anticipating. So how likely is it to happen? Mr. Bullard emphasized that the pattern isn’t set in stone, particularly given criticisms that rates remained too low for too long following the 2001 recession.

One of the touted indicators of the world’s end is the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in that year. NASA explains the calendar ends like your kitchen calendar ends on December 31, 2009. That does not mean the world is going to end in 2009. It means you need a new calendar.
